ANTIQUE VICTORIAN SOLID MAHOGANY ARTISTS WATERCOLOUR PAINT BOX c.1860-80. An incredible antique artist’s watercolor box dating from circa 1860-80. The box is made from solid mahogany and, unusually, has a sliding lid. The interior has a tray in which brushes can be stored. Most of the contents are still present: the original porcelain palette, four porcelain mixing bowls with gilt decoration, and a selection of watercolor tablets. Most tablets have cracked with age, but the condition is good. The contents will be wrapped separately for shipping purposes to prevent further damage. The quality of the box is good, beautifully made like a piece of quality furniture, although there is some cracking on the edges (see images for details. The patina and deep color of the wood show wonderful age.
A lovely handwritten note from the original owner’s granddaughter is in the box, stating – This paint box belonged to “Papa,” Lloyd Greenleaf Prentice, born 1885, died 1973. Contact...
