There is significant loss of paint over much of this statue. Part of the cross has been broken off plus there are scratches and chips all over. The main structure of this sculpture has not been broken so no re-attachments or glue.
This extraordinary piece has been damaged over the years but still has a majestic appearance. It depicts Jesus Christ's crucifixion and Saint Francis embracing him. This is a hefty solid piece that stands nearly 2 feet tall and is made of painted plaster commonly called chalkware . The paint looks very old but it does look like at some point someone may have painted over part of the original paint because in some areas I can see 2 different paint colors. Even if it was repainted, you can tell that both layers of paint are very old. This whole piece even smells old. I believe it to be 1940s or older based on the condition of the paint and the look of the plaster.
