Mirkwood is a vast forest in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, prominently featured in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It was originally known as Greenwood the Great until it became corrupted by the shadow of Sauron and his fortress, Dol Guldur. The forest is home to the Woodland Realm of the elves, led by King Thranduil, and is also inhabited by giant spiders and other menacing creatures.
