Anne Tyler chose the title, “French Braid”, from the premise that families are composed of plaited strands, much like the titular hairdo and the colorful braided rug on its cover. The novel takes place in Baltimore where the story of the Garrett family begins with a flash-forward to 2010 then travels back in time to 1959 when the Garretts went on their only family vacation, traveling to Deep Creek Lake on the other side of the state.
