Hand-carved Ainu bear (木彫り熊, kibori kuma) holding a salmon, a traditional folk craft from Hokkaido, Japan. The bear, known as kimun kamuy (mountain god) in Ainu culture, symbolizes strength, protection, and abundance. The salmon represents prosperity and the blessings of nature.
This piece features deep, dynamic chisel work that beautifully captures the bear’s fur and the natural form of the fish. Likely made as a mid-20th century Hokkaido souvenir, each carving is one-of-a-kind. Excellent display piece with cultural significance. Two other bear carving have been sold already. This is the last one.
