Recorded in '74, this is the debut and only album by Magnum, an 8-member funk band from LA. Featuring keyboardist Michael Greene and bassist Harold Greene (who later formed Karma), along with saxophonist Thurron Mallory, trumpeter Lamont Payne, and trombonist Vance Wormley, the band was active as the house band for the Soul Search Competition on local radio station KGFJ-AM.
They held Soul Caravan live performances every weekend, using the back of a truck as a stage, but the band disbanded naturally due to the members juggling multiple bands. However, the album resurfaced in the 90s as a source.
The album is amazing, with the intro featuring sharp percussion, and the full-blown sound of Diamond D / What You Seek and Arrested Development / Revolution material Evolution is electrifying. The killer break in the chorus of It's The Music That Makes Us Do It is incredibly cool, and the rough, gritty groove of Witch Doctor's Brew is addictive.
The track Composition Seven is cool, with its powerful beat and sophisticated arrangements. This album is a must-have when discussing , with its sticky, dark sound and B-movie feel, and no throwaway tracks.
Released in 2001, US, The Phoenix (TPS-6001), Stereo, high-quality remastered reissue. This album is already out of print and has been difficult to obtain for a long time.
