Patagonia actually started as a blacksmith.
Founder Yvon Chouinard began climbing in 1953, at the age of 14.
He then began making soft iron pitons.
This was a challenge to the idea of single-use items. This kind of challenge towards recycling would later be applied to Patagonia's fleece. Later, handmade production couldn't keep up, and in 1965, he partnered with Tom Frost, a climber and aerospace engineer, and they began to jointly manage Chouinard Equipment.

By 1970, Chouinard Equipment had become the largest supplier of climbing gear in the United States, but after witnessing the destruction of the mountains caused by pitons, they stopped producing the pitons that had been the starting point of the company.

Afterwards, he questioned climbing wear and, after the sale of the Umbro rugby shirts he wore from England proved very popular, he began to focus on selling apparel. Then, he decided to launch a brand specializing in apparel and named it Patagonia.

In the 90s, there was a popular series called Pile Glissade, which was one of Patagonia's representative series. It was a jacket manufactured for about 10 years from the late 80s to 98 and gained popularity. The Natural Blend Retro Cardigan was created with the image of the Glissade jacket (Thunder).
