Kamakura-bori round bowl, a traditional Japanese lacquerware from Kamakura.
It is made by carving patterns into wood.
The carved wood is then coated with layers of lacquer.
Makomo charcoal is applied over the red lacquer to enhance the three-dimensional effect.
The piece is polished to reveal the layers. Kamakura-bori items are used for daily necessities, tea utensils, and Buddhist altar fittings.
The bowl features a floral design, possibly a chrysanthemum or lotus.
This technique has a history of seven centuries.
