In 1983, at the young age of 18, Katsu Naito moved from Japan to New York and worked in a contract kitchen. In 1988, he settled in the Harlem district of Manhattan.
This area had just recovered from the brutal economic devastation of the 1970s and was at the peak of the dramatic upheaval brought to the long-time residents of this historic black community in the 1990s.
Naito, an outsider in every way except for where he lived, spent two years walking the neighborhood with a camera in hand before taking his first shot.
Little by little, Naito became familiar with the people and community he lived in, and they, in turn, became familiar with Naito. Gradually, a relationship of trust was built, and Naito was welcomed as a member of the people of Harlem, and was able to record the rapidly changing time and place with quiet kindness.
Once in Harlem, which expresses landscape photographs, environmental photographs, and makeshift studio photographs (reminiscent of Richard Avedon's more elaborate outdoor productions) with a sense of camaraderie and warmth, is a continuation of the American photographic tradition in which foreign-born artists have documented the people and customs of America, and is also an important historical document.
