The original edition, released in 1969, is now very expensive, but this is a popular edition released simultaneously in Japan and the United States in 2009.

Shuzo Takiguchi (preface), Donald Keene (essay), Toyoichiro Miyoshi (poetry), and Ikko Tanaka (book design) participated, all of whom were fascinated by Tatsumi Hijikata at the time. Ikko Tanaka was also commissioned to design the reprint, but he died during production.
Eight previously unpublished works have been added.
