This pin was designed by Louis C. Mark for Rice Weiner, circa 1941.
The pin of a Chinese water carrier is made of gold-plated base metal. The shirt is enameled in shades of blue with clear pave set rhinestone shorts. The water buckets are actually Venetian glass beads.
The pin measures 3 by 3 inches. The secure rollover pin is still intact and working.
The 1941 patent for this pin indicates a slight variation. This second version by Rice-Weiner features rhinestones instead of dots on the shorts. This version was not marked.
Condition is in excellent, one estate own condition.
An extensive account of the Rice-Weiner company can be found in the second volume of Carla and Roberto Brunialti’s American Costume Jewelry: Art and Industry 1935-1950. This pin can be found on page 241.
