The image shows an 1867 Hong Kong Shanghai Tael pattern coin, minted by the Hong Kong Mint.
Significance:
This coin was a special pattern issued by the Hong Kong Mint in an attempt to create a silver coin that would be more acceptable for circulation within China, incorporating the Chinese dragon and a weight standard (the tael) commonly used in Shanghai.
Design:
The obverse features the crowned British Arms within a garter, with ONE TAEL SHANGHAI HONG 1867 KONG around the edge. The reverse shows a dragon within a garter and four Chinese characters.
Rarity:
The Hong Kong Shanghai Tael pattern coins are considered extremely rare and highly desirable among collectors of Chinese silver coinage, especially the version with rays on the dragon side, as most were melted before release.
Historical Context:
The Hong Kong Mint, established in 1866, aimed to strike silver coins but faced profitability issues. Despite efforts to gain Chinese approval for the Tael, it was rejected.
