A Meiji-era Japanese reference set titled 《詩韻精英》 (Shi'in Sei'ei), compiled by Ikeda Kanken and published by 尚書堂 (Shōshodō) in 1880 (Meiji 13).
This 7-volume kanbun rhyme dictionary was created to help Japanese scholars navigate Classical Chinese poetry (kanshi), which posed challenges due to the vast grammatical and phonemic differences between Chinese (Sino-Tibetan) and Japanese (Altaic/Koreanic-Japonic), languages as distinct as English (Germanic) is from Greek (Hellenic).
It organizes characters by rhyme groups with fanqie readings and definitions from historical Chinese sources. Used in education to study the classics, it aided interpretation, memorization, and poetic composition. Housed in a traditional cloth case.
