The Land of Imperial Power, Sakurai: Special Exhibition at the Sakurai City Buried Cultural Property Center, 2019
Sakurai City, located in the southeastern part of the Nara Basin, has yielded numerous archaeological remains and artifacts from the Jomon period to the early modern period, with many still waiting to be discovered. Especially in the early Kofun period (3rd-4th centuries), the city boasts the Makimuku Kofun group, including the Makimuku Ishizuka Kofun, Katsuyama Kofun, and Yatsuka Kofun, known as the earliest Kofun tombs. In addition, there are large-scale early Kofun period tombs such as the Hashihaka Kofun, Sakurai Chausuyama Kofun, and Mesuriyama Kofun, as well as the Makimuku Site, where pottery from across Japan and the largest post-and-beam structure from the 3rd century have been found. These Kofun tombs and post-and-beam structures are believed to represent imperial power, suggesting that Sakurai was the birthplace of the Yamato Imperial Court.
Furthermore, the city has a tradition of 12 imperial palaces, starting with the Isoki Mizunori no Miya of Emperor Sujin (10th emperor) and ending with the Kurate no Miya of Emperor Sushun (32nd emperor). This indicates a long-standing connection between Sakurai and the imperial family. In particular, the Wakimoto Site, located near the traditional site of Emperor Yuryaku's (21st emperor) Tokose Asakura no Miya, has yielded post-and-beam structures and ditch-like remains dating back to the 5th century. These are believed to be related to the Asakura no Miya and are attracting attention as potential indicators of the palace's location.
This special exhibition is a joint project between our association and the Nara Prefectural Kashihara Archaeological Institute Museum. The exhibition will feature not only artifacts from Sakurai City's collection but also artifacts from the museum and the institute, allowing visitors to learn about The Land of Imperial Power, Sakurai through the remains and artifacts from the Makimuku Site, Sakurai Chausuyama Kofun, Wakimoto Site, and other sites.
