Kobo Abe (1924-1993)
Born in Tokyo. Graduated from the University of Tokyo, Faculty of Medicine. Awarded the Akutagawa Prize in 1951 (Showa 26) for The Wall. The Woman in the Dunes, published in 1962, won the Yomiuri Literary Award and the Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger in France. He also received numerous awards, including the Tanizaki Jun'ichiro Prize for the play Friends and the Yomiuri Literary Award for Green Stockings. From 1973, he formed the theatrical group Kobo Abe Studio and was known for his unique theatrical activities. He was highly regarded overseas and became an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1992 (Heisei 4). He passed away suddenly from acute heart failure in 1993.
