During World War II, the US Marine corps had soldiers stationed in the Philippines. Marines adopted the word bundok , which meant mountain, jungle, or anywhere remote. The soldiers needed a boot that was durable and comfortable to march the terrain during war. They wore trench boots which were given the nickname boondockers. The boondocker style shoe became the official working shoe of the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II .
