This whimsically decorated demitasse cup and saucer features two figures - a jaunty, whimisical lad and his grandmother and is decorated with gold trim. It is clearly marked on the bottom Made in Germany and Phebe E Clisby, Nantucket, Mass. indicating that the cup and saucer was made in Germany, imported to the U.S., and then decorated by Phebe E Clisby or another artist that she commissioned to do so. Ms. Clisby had a shop in Nantucket (1870s - 1908) at 8 Centre Street, Nantucket, Massachusetts—often dubbed “Petticoat Row” due to the number of women-owned shops. Her shop was extremely popular with tourists and locals looking for unique, decorative items. Clisby’s role as one of the island’s earliest female entrepreneurs makes her pieces particularly desirable to regional collectors. Likely made in late 19th/early 20th century. Set has no chips or cracks and is in excellent condition. This is a great piece of Nantucket history.
