Andreas Bauer started his pottery company in Kentucky in 1878. In 1910, he moved the whole company to his favorite winter vacation destination, Los Angeles. In the 1930’s, the Southern California lifestyle influenced Bauer to produce Ringware, the colorful textured pottery they would become famous for. World War II shortages of minerals to make the vibrant pigments and changing consumer tastes finally led to Bauer Pottery’s demise in 1962. New pieces of Bauer Ringware have been produced by a different owner since 1998. The new pieces are marked on the bottom with either ‘Bauer Los Angeles’ or ‘Bauer 2000’. Early 1930’s pieces like this sugar bowl have no markings and finding one with the lid intact is remarkable. This sugar bowl is in the popular Bauer Orange color and measures 5 5/8 inches wide by 4 inches tall. It is in excellent condition - the three marks on the bottom of the bowl and lid are from the stilts used to keep the glaze from sticking to the kiln during firing.
