Dolorosa (Sorrowful Mother).
This work is based on a 17th-century painting by Carlo Dolci (1616-1686), a Florentine painter known for his detailed and devotional works.
The painting depicts the Virgin Mary in a sorrowful pose, often with her hand near her face, hence the name Madonna del Dito (Madonna of the Thumb/Finger).
Dolci's original Mater Dolorosa was painted around 1655 and is famous for its numerous reproductions.
The original painting is an example of an icon intended for private devotion and is known for its emotional depth and traditional iconography.
The size is approximately 6” 3/4x 5” 3/4 , the blue thread around the Virgin Mary if frayed.
