This book is the sequel to Dogma and Ritual of High Magic, the pinnacle of Lévi's . It is a black scripture that continues to resonate deeply with symbolist poets of the same era, such as Baudelaire, Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, Mallarmé, Yeats, and Jarry, as well as with surrealists including Breton, and important writers of this century such as Joyce and Miller. Its appeal lies not only in its magical philosophy and mysticism, but also in its literary talent, which vividly and imaginatively depicts people and historical anecdotes. It is well known that the young Rimbaud read this book with great interest in the library of Charleville, and it became a source of his poetic ideas. In Japan, it has admirers such as Kiyonosuke Hinatsu, Kosaku Ikuta, and Tatsuhiko Shibusawa, and it is a magnum opus that has been awaited for translation since the Taisho era.
