Rarer than diamond, ammolite is found only in small deposits in the Rocky Mountains. It was first declared a new organic gem in 1981, by the World Jewelry Confederation. Bright and iridescent, it is derived from 65-million-year-old shells of marine mollusks. Ammolite is an expensive gemstone due to its rarity and limited supply, being sourced from only one region in the world, southern Alberta, Canada. It's also a unique gemstone, formed from the iridescent shell of a fossilized ammonite, a prehistoric marine creature. These factors, combined with the labor-intensive extraction and cutting process, contribute to its high value.
