This is a Minster, a high-end camera released in 1960 by Yashica, which manufactured Contax-brand cameras in collaboration with Zeiss from 1975. It has a solid feel and a cool design typical of a metal camera. The lens is a high-quality, 4-group, 5-element Xenotar type made by Tomioka Optical. The width is 136mm, a little smaller than the Electro's 141mm, making it easy to hold. This camera uses a selenium-powered, non-coupled light meter to read the LV value, and setting the ring on the lens tip to that value determines the exposure. You can freely change the combination of aperture and shutter speed while maintaining the LV value (exposure), allowing for advanced photography and exposure study. The mechanics are also well-designed; when rewinding, turning the switch on the bottom cover to R causes the rewind handle to pop up. Focusing is done with a coupled rangefinder with a split-image, and the bright frame is a high-quality, light-gathering window type, with automatic parallax correction.
【Appearance】Considering its age, the body is very clean. Both the top and bottom covers have no deterioration of the plating and are shiny. There are no dents or scratches on the bottom cover. The leatherette is intact. The lens barrel is also clean, and the engraved lettering is beautiful.
【Functionality】The light meter swings vigorously (in the 7th photo, at EV 12.5) and shows a nearly accurate value. The shutter speed changes according to the markings, although the accuracy is unknown. The release is light, and the sound is good. The aperture is also fine. The self-timer works. The viewfinder is clear (8th photo). Many units have deteriorated half-mirrors, but this one has been replaced, and the bright frame and split-image are clear. The rangefinder's infinity focus is also accurate. Strobe firing is OK via the sync terminal.
【Optics】The lens appears clean and clear to the eye (6th photo). There is a very small amount of dust on the middle element, but it's at a level that won't affect the image quality at all. The results of test shots with film are shown from the 9th photo onwards. There is no light leak, and the light seals are OK. The photo of the lights is at F4, 2m focus, and the background blur is beautiful. The round bench is at F4, 3m, and the metal has a nice sheen. The marina is at F5.6, 4m, and the twin-engine plane is at F5.6, 15m. The resolution is excellent to the periphery, and the color and three-dimensionality are superb.
The only included accessory is the original plastic cap. For Yashica and Yashinon fans, this is a working Minster in beautiful condition. How about it for practical use or collection?
※Released in 1960. I have confirmed the operation, but please refrain from purchasing if you are overly concerned about details.
