This volume assembles the history of modern architecture in an unprecedented form in which evocative photographs, taken specially by the world renowned photographer Yukio Futagawa, are combined with two separate but related texts; the first being ten consecutive chapters dealing with the main currents of the period; the second, a series of extended captions which attempt to situate each one of the illustrated exemplars in its proper context. As a result, the book may be read with equal ease both as a linear account and as a set of fragments to be selected more or less at random.
