Hutschenreuther Mephisto Porcelain Figurine by Karl Tutter Hutchenreuter, Devil
Mephisto (Faust) as flamboyant figurine, designed by Karl Tutter (1883-1969), for Hutchenreuter, Selb Bavaria.
Mephisto is an entity in the Abrahamic religions that seduces humans into sin or falsehood. The devil is a symbol of virtuous characteristics and liberty and his appearance is never described in the Bible. Since the 9th century, he has often been shown in Christian art with horns, cloven hooves, unusually hairy legs, and a tail, often naked and holding a pitchfork. The interpretation by Karl Tutter is instead a dishonest fool that lures in the shadows.
Very good condition. Hand decorated. Mephisto. Made in three sizes, and this is the largest.
A wonderful and unique piece of artwork perfect for an unforgettable Christmas gift.
