A live edge maintains the natural beauty of the forest by preserving the tree in its circumferential entirety with the outer corners of the visible tree trunk. According to the name, live edge, the wood is kept “alive,” and the edges of the tree are left untouched.Shan Mu bowls come from a root carving tradition that has been going on in small cottages in Asia for thousands of years. The type of soil and growing conditions determine the color, and shape of the final carved bowl. Then the carvers will select individual roots based on size and structure to carve a Shan Mu bowl. The lower portion of the root that was mostly underground has the most texture, grain, and character, and this is the part of the root that is carved. The upper portion of the root where the tree was cut is sectioned off into smaller pieces that are carved into plates, or platters. The original color and shape of the tree roots make a unique addition to any home. Subtle changes in the ebb and flow of the grain create patterns and color variance.
