Pillow box like this were commonly used in China during the Qing dynasty to deter would-be thieves. The owner would place valuables inside the box and rest his head on the concave lid. Many of these boxes were made of plain wood with no decoration, but more wealthy merchants would use boxes covered in leather and decorated with fine designs.
