Born in the Edo period, it is a tie-dye textile produced mainly in the Narumi area of Midori-ku, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. In those days, it was favored by travelers passing through the Tokaido as souvenirs to their hometowns, and was known as the finest specialty product of the road. Its appearance is depicted in various ukiyo-e by Hokusai Katsushika and Hiroshige Utagawa, making it a traditional Japanese craft.
