Golden Memory Vase/ stoneware, assemblage / c. late 19th century

souvenir vase with a dark, shifting patina, c. third quarter of the 19th century. The base is covered with tiny objects, such as jewelry, toys, faces, broken porcelain, bottles, boots, children, flowers, rolling pin, books, chains, lock, buttons, coins, etc.

These seemingly inconsequential things may have had consequences for their former owner: such memory assemblages brought together fragments significant to their creators, with some examples created to commemorate the dead. An evocative example of this American folk art tradition.
