A New York State Militia button excavated from the 1862 - 1863 winter camps of the Federal 6th Corp near White Oak Church in Stafford, Virginia located across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg. It was from these camps that the “Army of the Potomac” crossed the river in December of 1862 to fight at the Battle of Fredericksburg under General Burnside. After the defeat at Fredericksburg they returned to camp. While the button was found in their camp, it was probably worn by a New York infantryman during the Battle of Fredericksburg.
A carte de visite of unidentified soldier in the 22nd New York Infantry with bayoneted rifle, bedroll, and backpack in a uniform typical of troops from the State of New York. The image is reprinted courtesy of the Library of Congress.
